Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition

Alberta Environment owns and operates approximately 200 water management systems. Many of the major facilities and systems are automated and integrated into regionalized SCADA systems. SCADA systems are regularly implemented in the water resources industry to provide more efficient operation of remote facilities and manage the data that is available from them. There are two distinct parts to what Alberta Environment SCADA systems provide to the province:

Supervisory Control provides an invaluable tool for operations personnel by:

• Monitoring status of control gates, control valves and pumps
• Monitoring key water levels and flow rates
• Enabling safe and reliable local and remote operation of control equipment
• Annunciating alarm conditions to operations personnel

Data Acquisition provides a record for analysis of operations by:

• Collecting key operational information such as water levels and flow rates
• Storing historical operational information for use by operations personnel
• Providing record of WMO operational decisions

The SCADA systems installed on the water management systems owned and operated by Alberta Environment are implemented with state of the industry components. These systems are maintained on a regular basis and upgraded on an ongoing basis to ensure safe and reliable operation and monitoring of these important facilities and systems.
