Water Management Operations

In Alberta, our quality of life and our social and economic well-being depend on having a healthy and sustainable water supply.

Water Management Operations (WMO) plays a key role in the management of water in Alberta and is responsible for over $5 billion of water management infrastructure, including more than 200 water management systems. Operating and maintaining efficient and effective infrastructure is fundamental to support the environmental, economic and social objectives of the Province.

WMO is responsible for:

• WMO Operations Plan 2005-2006
• Operating and maintaining Provincially owned water management infrastructure. (Water Management Projects)
• Capital planning for rehabilitation and development of water infrastructure capital projects. (Managing Alberta's Infrastructure)
• Applying the Dam and Canal Safety Program for dams in the province, including mine wastes, to protect public safety and property. (Dam Safety)
• Operating and maintaining the Environment Infrastructure Management System (EIMS)
• Providing departmental representation, input and coordination of activities for the Capital Planning Initiative (CPI)
• Environmental mitigation and monitoring to reduce the environmental impacts of water management projects
• Managing the WMO land base. (Land Management)
• Maintaining a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system to monitor and operate key provincially owned Water Management Projects.
