CANADA - ALBERTA - NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
RESPONSE to THE NORTHERN RIVER BASINS STUDY
II. GOVERNMENTS' RESPONSE
The governments of Canada, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories
have reviewed in detail the findings and recommendations
of the Northern River Basins Study. The co-operative process adopted
by the NRBS Board is acknowledged and governments will continue
to work in that spirit.
In response to the NRBS recommendations, the governments commit
to ongoing and improving control of water pollution in the northern
river basins, to maintain the integrity of ecosystems, and to
facilitate the participation of all stakeholders in their protection.
The long-term protection of these rivers will require rigorous
control programs on point source discharges, and a basin management
approach that accounts for all factors affecting the ecosystem.
The Governments commit to:
- integrated planning
- pollution prevention
- ecosystem-based monitoring
- resolving contaminant and nutrient issues
- continuing environmental research
- the implementation of the Mackenzie River Basin Transboundary
Waters Master Agreement
- building partnerships to address the needs and concerns of
aboriginal people
- open and full public participation.
The recommendations from the NRBS Report to the Ministers
follow and are printed in bold italics.
The individual recommendations are followed by the response of
the governments.
