Examples of Partnerships in Transboundary Programs

In addition to the programs run directly by Alberta Environment, a number of other joint or independent long-term monitoring activities currently exist in Alberta. These include:

The Prairie Provinces Water Board - Surface water quality is monitored on east-flowing rivers at the Saskatchewan boundary. The Beaver, Battle, Red Deer, South Saskatchewan, and the North Saskatchewan rivers are all sampled monthly. The PPWB ensures that water quality agreements between provinces are met. Alberta is represented on the Board and participates on several technical sub-committees.

Mackenzie River Basin Transboundary Waters Master Agreement - Trans-boundary water quality objectives are being negotiated and monitoring is being carried out at sites on the Hay and Slave rivers. Governments of the Northwest Territories, Alberta and Canada provide support.

Environment Canada Transboundary Sites - Historical monitoring has occurred at seven border crossing sites, including the Peace River, Milk River, North Milk River, South Milk River, Waterton River, Belly River and the St. Mary's River.

Environment Canada National Parks Sites - Major rivers flowing from the Rocky Mountains are monitored upstream of any human development. These include the Bow River, North Saskatchewan River, and Athabasca River.
