Examples of Partnerships in Rivers and Stream Programs

Alberta Conservation Association

Study: Upper Little Red Deer River Study.

Objective: To provide an assessment of water quality conditions in the upper Little Red Deer River.

Little Bow River/Mosquito Creek Project

Study: Little Bow River Non-Point Source Project

The Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) requested a broad range of water quality projects to be completed before the first filling of the reservoir in April 2003. A sampling program dealing with all water quality requirements in the NRCB decision report has been designed, implemented and carried out over four years, with a post-project assessment to follow.

Other Parties Involved: Alberta Transportation, Alberta Infrastructure

Grand Valley Creek Watershed Group

Study: Water Quality Sampling of Grand Valley Creek, 2003-2005.

Objective: Water quality sampling was implemented by AENV with assistance from the group, to document current conditions in this basin and assist planning to improve water quality in Grand Valley Creek by this partnership of farmers and basin residents.

Other Parties Involved: County of Rockyview

Elbow River Watershed Partnership

Study: Impacts on Water Quality in the Upper Elbow River, and Followup Work in 2005.

Objective: Recent work has found evidence of deteriorating water quality in the Elbow River upstream of Glenmore Reservoir, source of half of the drinking water supply of Calgary. A study that examined the reasons for water quality deterioration, and made recommendations to improve water quality, was released by AENV and the City of Calgary in 2004. A partnership that represents all stakeholders in the upper Elbow basin has been formed to "support and encourage all stakeholders in the Elbow River watershed to protect and enhance water quality and quantity" (www.erwp.org/). This partnership has begun work on a water management plan for the Elbow River.

Other Parties Involved: City of Calgary
