Waste Hierarchy Profile

Waste Hierarchy Profile

An estimated 80 per cent of material currently disposed of at landfills is recoverable through composting (organics) and recycling (paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, glass). Our challenge is to reverse the current waste hierarchy by moving away from waste disposal and toward pollution prevention, waste reduction, reuse and recycling.

Working with many partner organizations, Alberta Environment is pursuing a number of strategies and initiatives, all with the intent of reducing the amount of waste going to provincial landfills and managing our resources in an economically and environmentally sustainable manner.
