Compost Legislation Advisory Committee

The Compost Legislation Advisory Committee was created in 2002 to review and propose improvements to the Government of Alberta’s compost legislation.

The committee members represent various stakeholders in Alberta’s compost industry, and include:

  • municipalities
  • commercial compost operators
  • confined feeding operations
  • Alberta Health
  • Alberta Energy; Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development
  • Natural Resource Conservation Board
  • Alberta Environment

Phase 2 of the Compost Legislation review began in April 2004. Three working groups were established to provide detailed guidelines and standards for composting. These groups include:

  • Facility: siting and design
  • Operating the Facility: operating and reporting, environmental monitoring, education and certification
  • Final Product: compost quality and use, sampling, monitoring, quality assurance/quality control
