Data for this indicator come from the annual reports submitted by the oil sands mining operators to Alberta Environment as a condition of their approval. The indicator does not include the development and reclamation activities of in situ oil sands operations.

The approved development area information comes from the approvals issued by Alberta Environment, or the proponent’s Environmental Impact Assessment.
