Climate

Alberta has a continental climate. In winter, Arctic air masses can produce periods of very cold temperatures until warmer westerly winds from the Pacific Ocean manage to push their way across the mountains into Alberta. Summers can be short and dry. Throughout the year, Albertans enjoy a large number of sunny days.

Climate, however, is not constant. Alberta's climate is part of the global environment and evidence exists of global warming due to the "greenhouse effect". Opinions vary regarding the actual effect of human-produced greenhouse gas emissions on the global climate. Even though opinions vary, Alberta has adopted a pro-active approach to this issue. Alberta's action plan focuses on improving energy efficiency, improving our emissions-control technologies, finding new environmentally friendly sources of energy, and better managing our emissions. A copy of the Action Plan can be found here.
