Hydrogen Sulphide Levels: More about the data

Hydrogen sulphide trends are based on data collected by the continuous monitoring stations operated by Alberta Environment and the airshed zones. Hydrogen sulphide data from the airshed zones and Alberta Environment stations can be obtained directly from the Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA) Data Warehouse.

In 2007 there were 12 Alberta Environment and airshed zone stations monitoring hydrogen sulphide. Eleven stations are included in the analysis for this indicator. The Lethbridge, Valleyview and Scotford stations also monitor hydrogen sulphide, but do not have adequate data for trend analysis. Only those stations with five or more years of consecutive data are included in the analysis. Trends that are statistically significant (a=0.05) are represented with an asterisk. The Fort McMurray station stopped monitoring hydrogen sulphide in 1998, after which this station was taken over by the Wood Buffalo Environmental Association Airshed. The airshed decided to monitor Total Reduced Sulphur (which monitors a whole suite of sulphur compounds as a whole), rather than H2S exclusively. Similarily, the Sherwood Park station is operated by the Strathcona Industrial Association and the data is not provided to the CASA Data Warehouse as of 2004.

Current concentrations of hydrogen sulphide are posted on Alberta Environment's interactive air quality website.
