Air Indicators

Reporting Outdoor Air Quality in Real-Time

Indicator Type: Stewardship

This indicator tracks the percentage of air quality monitoring stations that collect and report data in real time.

"Real-time" reporting refers to air quality data (hourly concentrations) being available on an hour-to-hour basis. This information is posted on a public website. This indicator is based on Alberta Environment and airshed monitoring stations and does not include stations operated by private industry.

What does the indicator show?

As of 2007, 98% of air quality data gathered by Alberta Environment and the airshed zones was available in real time. These real-time data are available either on the individual airshed websites or on Alberta Environment's website. To view which stations reported in real time in 2007, visit the map of real-time monitoring stations. There is currently only 1 station which is not reporting in real-time. This station is scheduled to begin reporting in real-time in the near future. The total number of stations dropped from 2005 to 2006 because the Edmonton South station was added in 2005, but replaced the Edmonton Northwest station in 2006 (therefore both stations were operating in 2005).

Industry also conducts continuous monitoring at almost 100 stations, in accordance with the emissions reporting requirements set out in each industry's operating approval. At the present time, these data are reported to Alberta Environment in paper reports and are not available to the public on the Internet. This ambient industry data will soon be available on the CASA Data Warehouse.

Why is this indicator important?

The number of real-time air monitoring stations gives an indication of how well the quality of the air throughout Alberta is being monitored and reported to the public.

The main purpose of the monitoring stations is to collect outdoor air quality data to evaluate the potential impacts of air emissions on human health, livestock, crops, soil and water. It is important that this information be delivered promptly to Albertans. This indicator tracks Alberta’s progress in doing so.

What actions are being taken?

Alberta Environment is working with airshed organizations and industry to encourage better access to data in real time for the public. The long-term goal for Alberta Environment is to have all airshed data reported in real time through a centralized provincial website. Informal arrangements have been established with each of the airshed zones for provision of real-time data to Alberta Environment's real-time air quality website. Currently, most airsheds provide access to real-time data from the stations that they manage on their own websites.
