The Northern East Slopes Sustainability Strategy
In the long-term, this Government of Alberta regional strategy envisions:
“Integrated management of natural resources in a manner that ensures a healthy and sustainable environment, economy and community that can be enjoyed by present and future generations.”
The following specific regional goals will help guide resource and environmental management by government, industry and Albertans.
Economic sustainability
Maintain opportunities for current primary resource industries while providing long-term opportunities for economic diversification.
Environmental sustainability : maintaining ecosystem and species diversity
Conserve biodiversity using a landscape approach, supplemented by specific management for species at risk.
Environmental sustainability—air, water and soil
Continue protection of the region's air, water and soil resources through linked, integrated planning processes, ongoing research and monitoring.
Community and regional sustainability
Include the interests of local governments and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Albertans in resource and environmental decision-making by government and industry.
Access
Manage access in the region, supporting industrial resource development and providing opportunities for tourism and recreation, while limiting the access “footprint” and maintaining environmental values.
***
Implementation of the Northern East Slopes Sustainability Strategy is now being incorporated into the business plans of the appropriate Government of Alberta departments.
The Government of Alberta will address issues raised (but not unique to the northern east slopes region) by developing province-wide policy.
